Top 5 ways to strengthen your immune system

As the winter is slowly creeping in, now it’s never been a better time to give a little loving boost to your immune system! Here’s Happy Yoga Kitchen’s top 5 ways to strengthen your immunity and feel good all through the cold months ahead: 1. (The obvious one) EAT MORE PLANTS A diet made up of plan-based whole foods like fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes in their most natural state and minimally processed is high in immunity boosting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Here’s a few of plant based foods that specifically target boosting your immune system: Blueberries, kiwis, broccoli, mushrooms, almonds, sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, garlic, ginger, red bell peppers, spinach, oregano oil 2. GET A GOOD SLEEP AND PLENTY OF SIESTA  Getting sufficient sleep helps to fight inflammation and infections. And according to SleepFoundation.org “Without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and, effectively creating an immune response. Chronic sleep loss even makes the flu vaccine less effective by reducing your body’s ability to respond.” 3. TRY YOGA Some yoga poses as well as deep breathing can help strengthen the immune system (I’ll talk more about that in my next post) 4. SING YOUR HEART OUT  Research shows that singing for at least one hour can significantly reduce the stress hormone Cortisol, and can increase in quantities of cytokines- proteins of the immune system- which can boost the body’s ability to fight infections and illnesses.  5. HUG MORE (Well, at least the ones you can 😁) Hugs can help stimulate the thymus gland which regulates the body’s production of white cells, which fight off disease. Hugging also releases endorphins, the happiness hormone, which is also a natural pain reliever, as well as dopamine, which is a chemical produced in a reward centre of the brain that is a natural antidepressant. Hugs can also alleviate stress, anxiety, lower blood pressure, relax the muscles and balance the whole nervous system.
